research into the effects of notifications

"There has been a considerable amount of research into the effects of notifications. People have studied the negative effects of interruptions in terms of task performance and emotional state, and have even created models to predict the cost of interruptions. It turns out, interrupting the user is bad." blog.mozilla.com/faaborg/2007/03/06/would-you-like-to-redesign-notification-in-firefox-yes-not-now-never/

expand and contract shortened URLs - a search.twitter.com feature

For Firefox and Flock, using the LongURL Mobile Expander Add-on enables the user to see what the short URL expands to, but Safari search.twitter.com has this feature built-in...

  • When Safari search.twitter.com encounters a shortened URL, is added next to the short URL. Click to expand the shortened URL, and click to restore to the short URL.

NOTE: I have not found this feature in the Safari documentation yet. Any know where this feature is documented?

Finally updated to Flock 2 and Firefox 3

I took the plunge, and finally updated my Flock and Firefox browsers.

We'll see which of my favorite Addons/Extensions no longer work *and* I miss having them.

Pangram - Word of the day

pangram, as defined by http://www.owlsoup.com/foamtrain/glossary/ppp.html:
A sentence containing every letter of the alphabet. Useful in font demonstrations. Frequently used are phrases like “How razorback-jumping frogs can level six piqued gymnasts!” or “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” But less common are “The risque gown makes a very brazen exposure of juicy flesh.” or “Jaded zombies acted quaintly but kept driving their oxen forward” or even “The sex life of the woodchuck is a provocative question for most vertebrate zoology majors.” and the even more rare “Jelly-like above the high wire, six quaking pachyderms kept the climax of the extravaganza in a dazzling state of flux.”

define:pingback

A Pingback is one of three types of Linkbacks, methods for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to, or referring to their articles. Some weblog software, such as Movable Type, WordPress and Community Server, support automatic pingbacks where all the links in a published article can be pinged when the article is published.” - Pingback, according to Wikipedia

How to add Search Plugins to Mozilla browsers

  • Either you install Add to Search Bar, and then you can easily* add any site's search to your browser's Search plugins...
  • Or for Firefox, you can add Firefox Search Tools, to add predefined plugins,
  • Or for Flock, you can use Flock's Add a new Search Engine feature to add any site's search to your browser's Search plugins.
BTW, you can also better organize search plugins with the “Organize Search Engines” addon.

* After installing Add to Search Bar, go to any website's search box, and right-click to bring up the context menu, select "Add to Search Bar..." and that website's search will get added to your list of search plugins.

Google Docs Upload, as easy as 1 2 3 - Using prod.writely.com

Do you want to be able to easily create documents, from HTML,  Microsoft Word (.doc), Rich Text (.rtf), OpenDocument Text (.odt) and StarOffice (.sxw),  Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pps), Comma Separated Value (.csv), Microsoft Excel (.xls) files and OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods), and PDF Files?

Here's how...

Send an email to your Google Docs Upload "Email-In Your Documents and Files" email address:
  1. Prepare to compose an email (e.g. click on Gmail_Notifier icon's downarrow, click on Compose Mail)
  2. Address email to your Google Docs Upload "Email-In Your Documents and Files" email address (e.g. Firstname-Lastname-uniqueidentifier@@prod.writely.com)
  3. Compose the mail*
  4. Send
OK, so it takes 4 steps, so it is as easy as 1 2 3 4

But, still, using this simple process results in the creation of a document, spreadsheet, or presentation.

Upon successful completion of the upload, you will get an email telling you about the completion, and you are given a link to the new document**.

Pretty sweet, huh?

*Types of files that you can upload:

Documents (up to 500KB)
  • HTML files and plain text (.txt).
  • Microsoft Word (.doc), Rich Text (.rtf), OpenDocument Text (.odt) and StarOffice (.sxw).
Presentations (up to 10MB from your computer, 2MB from the web, 500KB via email)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt, .pps).
Spreadsheets (up to 1MB)
  • Comma Separated Value (.csv).
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls) files and OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods).
PDF Files (up to 10MB from your computer, 2MB from the web)

** For example:

This document has been imported into Google Docs on your behalf:
http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=uniqueidentifier&invite=
Just FYI,

SocialMentions sources

Social Mention
Social Mention is a social media search engine that searches user-generated content such as blogs, comments, bookmarks, events, news, videos, and micro-blogging services.

It allows you to easily track what people are saying about you, your company, a new product, or any topic across the web’s social media landscape in real-time.

Search results are aggregated from numerous popular social media sources, including Google blog search, Twitter, Delicious, FriendFeed, Flickr, Digg, YouTube etc. and remixed as a single stream of information. The data is fresh, which means you can track conversations as they are happening in real-time.

In addition to web-based search results, Social Mention also features email alerts and personalized RSS feeds for automatic and instant updates
